FM: chemical weapons victims have difficulty accessing medicine due to US sanctions

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, in a message, wrote that America’s unilateral and coercive sanctions have made it extremely difficult for Iranian chemical weapons victims to access medicine and medical supplies.

Amirabdollahian wrote the message on Wednesday on the occasion of the National Day of Combating Chemical and Biological Weapons, as well as the 35th anniversary of the Sardasht chemical attack, which fell on Tuesday.

The attack, conducted by the former Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hossein, left more than 100 people dead in Sardasht, northwest Iran, during the eight-year imposed war in the 1980s.

Amirabdollahian, in his message, said that the former Iraqi regime used chemical weapons against Iranian civilians and military personnel more than 300 times during the war. But, the chemical attack on Sardasht and nearby villages marked the most tragic incident caused by Saddam and his Western supporters, especially the US, Britain and Germany.

The top diplomat said that Iran has been a victim of chemical weapons more than any other country during in the modern age, and condemns the use of such weapons by anyone at any time and under any circumstances.

He also said that Iran has gained precious experience in curing chemical weapons victims and is always ready to share its experiences with the global community.

Further in his message, Amirabdollahian said that Iran has made efforts over the past decades to alleviate concerns of its chemical weapons victims. However, part of the efforts made at the international level has faced impediments mainly caused by lack of a political will by certain governments as well as imperfections of the existing international criminal and legal system.

He added that Iranian chemical weapons victims were among the vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 pandemic, and their situation was aggravated because of the US’ unilateral and coercive sanctions.
